FOCUSED ON YOUR HEALTH BEYOND THE GYM

When we're at the box, we are putting in a lot of hard work toward physical fitness and overall health. A lot is being accomplished in 1 hour. That leaves the rest of the day to make decisions that can either compliment or ruin our hard work.

CrossFit RYS offers this Nutrition page to help facilitate those choices by providing tips about what we should and should not be consuming to fuel and recover our bodies. Reaching further, we hope the information provided here will aid in the fight against chronic diseases like heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and more simply by making healthier food choices.

The first and most important step: EAT REAL FOOD! Meat and vegetables, seeds and nuts, some fruit, little starch and avoid added sugar as much as possible. By keeping in mind this simple tip, you will be setting yourself up for a healthier approach to your nutrition.

WHAT IS REAL FOOD?

HOW MUCH SHOULD I EAT?

PROCESSED FOOD

ADDED SUGARS

Added sugars are any sugar that is not naturally occurring in the food and has been added manually. Added sugars aren't just hidden in processed sweets. Added sugars often are used in low-fat foods to improve taste and consistency.

Foods with ingredients added for flavor and texture (sweeteners, spices, oils, colors and preservatives) include jarred pasta sauce, salad dressing, yogurt and cake mixes.

It is highly recommended to review a product's ingredient list and look for added sugars among the first two or three ingredients including sugar, maltose, brown sugar, corn syrup, cane sugar, honey and fruit juice concentrate, to name a few.

There is a large number of varying names that all mean "sugar" you'll come across on an ingredient list (a lot of those contain the suffix "-ose"), so be on the look out for sneaky, hidden sugars!
